The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

· 3 min read

The game inherits its world from The Witcher series of novels. Fifteen hundred years before the events of the books, a cataclysm struck: worlds from different dimensions collided, becoming directly connected and bleeding into one another.

The Conjunction of the Spheres

That cataclysm is known as the Conjunction of the Spheres. It left all manner of creatures from other worlds stranded in this one—ghouls, grave hags, and higher vampires are among the remnants it left behind. These creatures carry their own distinct ecologies, relics of a bygone age. According to elven legend, humans came to this world after their own was destroyed. Their ancestors learned to harness the forces of chaos, giving rise to the first human mages, who fought against the creatures from other worlds. But with monsters scattered everywhere and hard to kill, and ordinary people unable to stand against them, witchers came into being—mutated humans hired by common folk to hunt monsters for a living, protecting people from the creatures that threatened them.

The Game's Story

After recovering his memory, Geralt sets out to track down Yennefer. Eventually, Yennefer reaches out to Geralt after years apart, asking him to meet her in a village in Willoughby. But when Geralt arrives at the meeting place, the entire village has been razed by an army, and Yennefer is nowhere to be found. Along the way Geralt runs into Vesemir, who helps him follow Yennefer's trail. On the road, Geralt dreams of events at Kaer Morhen—a vision warning him that his adopted daughter Ciri is in some kind of trouble. Geralt and Vesemir stop at White Orchard, where Yennefer appears at the local inn escorted by Nilfgaardian soldiers. Before the old lovers can even catch up, Yennefer insists that Geralt come with her at once to Vizima for an audience with the Emperor of Nilfgaard. Their party is ambushed by the Wild Hunt on the way, but they make it to their destination. In the meeting with the emperor, Geralt learns that Ciri has returned from a distant land, that her life is in danger, and that the Wild Hunt is pursuing her. And so the main story of the game truly begins.
